Tuyo Health Expands to Puerto Rico – Offering Free Telehealth Visits Amid Growing Healthcare Crisis

Puerto Rico’s healthcare system is in a state of emergency. According to the newly released Puerto Rico Healthcare Workforce Study by FTI Consulting (March 2025), the island is experiencing a severe and worsening shortage of healthcare workers:
· The physician workforce has shrunk dramatically over the last decade, with a 36% decline in practicing doctors between 2006 and 2023.
· Puerto Rico now has just 97 primary care physicians per 100,000 people – well below the U.S. average of 156.
· Nursing shortages are equally dire. There are fewer than 4 nurses per 1,000 residents, compared to over 9 per 1,000 on the mainland.
· Over 60% of physicians are over the age of 55, signaling an aging workforce with no pipeline to replace it.
· Economic instability continues to drive medical professionals off the island, accelerating the crisis.
